The McCabe Centre is honoured to have contributed to the Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) Global Decade Report 2.0: Knowledge in Motion – A Decade Reviewed, A Decade Defined.

In Chapter 10: Legal and Workplace Rights for People with ABC, we explored the legal and employment protections available to people living with advanced breast cancer (ABC) across different jurisdictions.

Launched this week in Lisbon, Portugal at The ABC Global Consensus Conference, the report highlights the importance of legal and workplace rights in improving quality of life for people with ABC.

Our lead contributor, Sarah McHutchison, presented the findings from our chapter, sparking important conversations on global equity and advocacy.

Drawing on this global analysis, the ABC Global Alliance has included a powerful new goal in the 2025–2035 Global Charter:

Improve the legal rights of people with ABC, including the right to continue or return to work.

To achieve this, future efforts must focus on:

  • Advocating for stronger laws and policies that provide social and financial protections for people with ABC and their informal caregivers.
  • Empowering individuals with clear, accessible information about their legal rights and obligations.
  • Ensuring flexible return-to-work programs are available for those who wish to work.- Educating employers to promote non-discrimination and uphold the right to work.
  • Encouraging governments to review work rights and anti-discrimination laws through the lens of people with ABC and their caregivers.

This is a critical step toward equity, dignity, and empowerment for people living with ABC around the world. We are grateful to our collaborators from around the world who also contributed to this work.
