Reignite the Fight – McCabe Centre at the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference 2024

Tobacco control workshop

Our McCabe Centre team had an inspiring few days at the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference (OTCC) on the Gold Coast recently. Under the theme, “Reignite the Fight,” we heard from both veteran leaders and new voices addressing the ongoing battle against the tobacco industry. Discussions ranged from the complexities of emerging nicotine products to innovative strategies to protect young people from tobacco’s harmful influence. With lung cancer causing 1.8 million deaths globally each year and tobacco responsible for 8 million deaths overall, the urgency of our mission couldn’t be clearer.

"The tobacco industry continues to manipulate messaging and policy to draw young people toward their products, regardless of the devastating outcomes. The OTCC was a fantastic opportunity to share strategies, challenges, and insights as we work alongside leading experts regionally and globally to advance effective tobacco and e-cigarette laws,” said Hayley Jones, Director of the McCabe Centre.

Uniting for Change

The OTCC is a biennial gathering that brings together researchers, advocates, policymakers, and administrators across Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. We extend our gratitude to Cancer Councils NSW, QLD, and WA for organizing an impactful event, and it was rewarding to collaborate with colleagues from Cancer Councils, Quit, and various research, civil society, and governmental bodies. Together, we are reigniting the fight to protect communities from the harms of tobacco and nicotine.

Reflections from our Melbourne Law School intern: Jeremy Hand

Monday 12 May 2025
If I look back to when I finished school, I had interests in both law and health. I studied biomedicine in my undergraduate degree and have subsequently gone on to study law but had not yet found a way to combine the two areas of interest. Fortunately, I came across the McCabe Centre through the Melbourne Law School’s legal internship program.

Laws for clean air will save lives

Reflections on the 2nd WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health: There are few things more important to life than the air we breathe. Yet almost nobody on the planet has access to clean air - 99% of the world live somewhere where the air fails to meet the World Health Organization’s air quality standards, and air pollution kills more than 7 million people each year.
