Pacific Tobacco Control excellence award

The McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer is proud to convene an Inaugural Award program – in recognition of excellence and significant contribution to tobacco control in Pacific Island Countries and Territories. The winner of this award will be recognised at the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference on the Gold Coast, Australia on 24 October 2024.

The award is open to a person or group working in tobacco control in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

Selection Criteria

  • Either an individual or a group may apply for the award.
  • Applicant/s must be resident or working in a Pacific Island Country or Territory, or be able to demonstrate a significant connection to one or more Pacific Island Countries or Territories.
  • The applicant/s have worked in tobacco control for at least three years or the project being nominated has been active within the past three years.
  • The applicant/s must complete a declaration of interest confirming no connection to the tobacco industry.
  • Nominees do not need to be attending the Oceania Tobacco Control Conference.

The nominations will be reviewed taking into account contribution to the following:

  • Achievement in tobacco control at a local, regional or international level
  • Skill in application or generation of evidence and argument for tobacco control
  • Successful collaboration in tobacco control within and across Pacific Island Countries and Territories
  • Demonstrated advocacy or secured political commitments on tobacco control
  • Successful tobacco control projects, such as relating to smoking cessation, reaching underserved groups, awareness raising, social media campaigns, or clinic interventions, youth smoking, smoking of minors,tobacco control and environmental impacts/climate change, or other relevant issue.
  • Resilience and persistence.

Applications will be considered by a committee of tobacco control experts from the region.
